Sustainable House Day provides an opportunity to open the doors to sustainable living and share ideas and inspire others interested in building or renovating your own sustainable home.

Three local properties are featured at this year’s Sustainable House Day and will be open to the public on September 15.

They are:

  • Allansford Cottages, 79a Carrolls road, Allansford,

These are 1850 cottages that have been renovated and restored. The work showcases some traditional building methods and features local timbers and recycled windows. The now highly insulated cottages are situated in beautiful garden surrounds.

  • Jukes St Renovation, 30 Jukes St, Warrnambool

A 1960s cream brick home has been transformed into a light-filled open plan home.  Windows were replaced with larger double glazed units; underfloor, external wall and roof insulation was added to make this home perform much better in winter. The add addition of extra living space with a high ceiling and large east highlight window, floods the area with light while taking advantage of elevated north views across the city

  • Retro River Rest, 36 Stanley Street, Warrnambool

A reimagining of shipping containers and a very clever combination of op shop furniture, fittings and decorations which make the bright interiors very welcoming.

“I really encourage anyone interested in living more sustainably to have a look at these three homes,” Mayor Cr Tony Herbert said.

“They will be a great source of ideas and inspiration for making changes that will reduce energy consumption while adding comfort to a home.”

A free bus tour to all three homes will be available on the day. The bus will leave from Ozone Carpark at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Seats are limited and bookings are essential:

An added “bonus building” will be Council’s first off-grid solar installation, which is a storage building in Ozone Carpark, close to the bus departure point.

Sustainable House Day is a project of the Warrnambool Environment Action Group and is supported by Warrnambool City Council.
