Funding to flow for rail line upgrade

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 21 March 2018

Warrnambool City Council has welcomed the recent announcement by the Victorian Government that funding is now available for the $114 million upgrade of the Melbourne to Warrnambool rail line.

Work on the upgrade to the Warrnambool line is now expected to start later this year.

The upgrade will allow for a fifth daily return service between Warrnambool and Melbourne, and help pave the way for VLocity trains to run on the line.

A new crossing loop will make it easier for trains to pass each other, which will help services recover from unexpected delays more quickly.

Other improvements include new train stabling facilities at Warrnambool.

The upgraded line will support the local freight industry and allow export products such as meat and dairy to be moved more quickly to the Port of Melbourne by rail.

Over the past year there have been upgrades to 22 level crossings on the Warrnambool line as part of the Safer Country Crossings Program.

Car parking spaces at the Warrnambool Railway Station will also be added.
