Great Ocean Road Action Plan information session

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 17 October 2018

The Warrnambool community is being encouraged to attend a Great Ocean Road Action Plan information session tomorrow.

The session will provide people with an opportunity to find out about the action plan and to ask questions.

The Great Ocean Road Action Plan was officially unveiled on October 12 by Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’ambriosio and the Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren alongside with Maar and Wadawurrung representatives.

Major reforms detailed in the action plan include:

  • Stand-alone legislation that recognises and protects the coast, parks and scenic landscapes along the Great Ocean Road as the ‘one integrated and living entity’;
  • A dedicated (statutory) coast and parks agency with an independent, skills-based board to manage and be publicly accountable for the protection of the environment, sustainable visitation and delivery of government investment;
  • Development of a community vision with a long-term outlook and overarching strategic framework plan for the length of the Great Ocean Road; and,

  • A better planning approvals process.

The action plan follows 26 recommendations made by the Great Ocean Road Taskforce’s independent co-chairs, former Victorian transport ministers Peter Batchelor and Terry Mulder, who considered feedback received via conversations with 780 people and 570 survey responses and submissions.

“The Great Ocean Road is of immense importance to the South West,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Robert Anderson said.

“It’s vital that we ensure that visitors to our region continue to have a great experience.

“And there is so much more potential to our visitor economy in terms of having people stay longer and encouraging them to venture beyond the 12 Apostles.

“So I really encourage those with an interest in this iconic stretch of road and in our visitor economy, to attend the information session.”

The Victorian Government supports all 26 recommendations and proposes that they be implemented, subject to funding.

The Warrnambool Information session will be held on Thursday, October 18 at the Pavilion Café and Bar from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
