TEDx coming to Warrnambool in 2020

News Article Date:
Friday, 19 July 2019

Warrnambool will be showcased on the world stage through a leading platform for the propagation of ideas, creativity and innovation.

In a major coup for the city, Warrnambool has been chosen to host a TEDx event in April 2020.

TED is a non-profit global organisation devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TEDlike experience.

TEDx talks are among the most popular videos on social media, with the TEDx Talks YouTube channel having more than 19 million subscribers. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection.

These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised, subject to certain rules and regulations.

TEDxWarrnambool Organiser Helen Sheedy said that the event will provide a platform for Warrnambool speakers to reach a massive audience.

“This is an amazing opportunity to tell the stories of our region to potentially millions of people around the globe,” she said.

“Warrnambool will be the first regional city in Victoria and just the second in Australia given a licence to stage a TEDx event.

“TEDxWarrnambool will be a place in our community that inspires people to change their lives, futures and, ultimately, the world.”

The search is now on for up to five presenters who will speak for up to 15 minutes each.

“Rather than beginning with an overarching theme for the talks, we decided to keep the parameters wide to encourage broad inclusion and to showcase the diversity and history that our region provides,” Ms Sheedy said.

“If you have an idea that is worth sharing and you want to make a local and global impact, we want to hear from you.”

Warrnambool City Council is the principal partner for the event.

Applications to speak at the event are now open. They can be sent to helen [at] tedxwarrnambool [dot] com.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED conferences, including our annual gathering in Vancouver, as well as TEDWomen, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organised TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of the talks from TED2019 will also be published to TED's podcast TED Talks Daily, available on Apple Podcasts and all other podcast platforms.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; TEDx, which licenses thousands of individuals and groups to host local, self-organised TED-style events around the world; the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities; the Audacious Project, which surfaces and funds critical ideas that have the potential to impact millions of lives; TEDSummit, which gathers the most engaged members of the global TED community for brainstorms, discussions, performances, workshops and an eclectic program of mainstage talks; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED also has a library of original podcasts, including The TED Interview with Chris Anderson, Sincerely, X, and one of Apple Podcasts’ most downloaded new shows of 2018, WorkLife with Adam Grant.
